Scholz SugarCone R-1 12” Guitar Speaker

The Classic British Voice, Refined.

The Scholz SugarCone R-1 is the ultimate evolution of the classic British guitar speaker, designed to deliver rich harmonic content, powerful projection, and unmistakable character. Developed by George Scholz in collaboration with legendary amp designer Harry Joyce, the R-1 takes the foundation of traditional ribbed-cone speakers and refines it for enhanced reliability, clarity, and dynamic response. Whether you’re chasing vintage warmth or modern punch, the R-1 delivers a perfectly balanced tone with smooth highs, detailed mids, and a tight low end.

Key Features:

Ribbed Cone Design: The ribbed paper cone enhances projection, warmth, and breakup characteristics, providing the classic British-style compression and articulation.

2-Inch Voice Coil: A robust 2” voice coil ensures greater reliability, improved power handling, and a balanced frequency response, allowing your tone to cut through effortlessly.

Refined British Sound: From sparkling cleans to thick, harmonically rich overdrive, the R-1 maintains clarity and depth across all playing styles.

Versatile Performance: Designed for both vintage and modern amplifiers, the R-1 adapts to your sound, whether in recording studios, live performances, or rehearsal spaces.

Built for the Road: Featuring durable construction and meticulous craftsmanship, the R-1 is built to withstand the demands of professional musicians.

Understanding the Model Naming System:

The Scholz SugarCone speaker lineup follows a logical naming structure to help players identify key features:

R = Ribbed Cone, P = Plain Cone

1 = Ferrite Magnet, 2 = Neodymium, 3 = Alnico

8/16 = Impedance Rating (8Ω or 16Ω)

For example, the R-1 8/16 represents a Ribbed Cone speaker with a Ferrite magnet, available in either 8Ω or 16Ω impedance options.

Technical Data:

Power Handling: 100W RMS

Efficiency: 97.52 dB

Impedance: Available in 8Ω or 16Ω

Mounting: Front/Rear Mountable

Connections: Press Speaker Terminals

Voice Coil: 2”

From legendary rock tones to crisp, articulate cleans, the Scholz SugarCone R-1 delivers the timeless sound that guitarists trust.

Very happy these are being made again.

Back when these were originally made, they were my favorite speakers and I had them in all my cabinets. I've been looking for used ones for some time and recently discovered they were being made again and I'm so glad I did!

Very nice!

I’m impressed by this speaker. I replaced a Celestion Creamback with it and the Sugarcone really opened up the sound of my 1x12 Park cab.

Simply a great sounding driver

Very pure, clear and sparkling tone. Deep, full -bodied low end, slightly scooped, airy midrange, bell-like treble with detail and clarity. Bright and chimey but never shrill nor brittle

I can see this speaker being used for a wide variety of types and styles of music

Highly recommended

Chimey & Balanced

I have a lot of high-end guitar speakers, and I'm glad I gave this new Sugarcone 8-ohm 12" a try. Even without much break-in, I enjoy this speaker with cleans and dirt. After comparing with many classic speakers, this Sugarcone seems most aligned with a Fane Crescendo ~ish character. The bass is very punchy and tight, mids are clear, and treble is present but not overbearing. Upper mids are nice and chimey, and overall the speaker allows for articulation over a full tonal range. The Sugarcone compares very favorably with a Rawson Sparfield Starfinder DG12A, which is a close copy of the original Fane Crescendo. The Sugarcone weighs less, and costs less, however. I'm very impressed - this Sugarcone will go into my Amplified Nation Dirty Wonderland combo. Thanks Scholz!
